Palmistry Diagram of Hand
Palmistry is the study of the various features of the human hand –usually the dominant or the right hand, which is used to write. It analyzes its structure, the lines, the mounts, fingers, fingernails, color, shape, knuckles, hardness and so on. The study of the hand helps the palmist to understand the nature and the personality of the person and predicthis future.
Palmistry owes its origin to the wisdom of the ancient Indian sages some 5,000 years back. The first known book on Palmistry written in verse by the sage Valmiki runs into 567 stanzas.
The knowledge of Palmistry traveled from India to various parts of the world including China, Tibet, Egypt, Persia, European countries and finally to Greece where it was practiced by Anaxagoras. The Greeks made several important contributions to the study of Palmistry. For example, ring finger is associated with Greek god Apollo.
The shape of the hand has been broadly classified into four categories:
- Earth hands are generally broad with square palms and fingers. They have coarse skin and ruddy color. The length of the palm from the bottom of the fingers to the wrist is equal to the length of the fingers.
- Air hands are square or rectangular in shape. They have long fingers and dry skin. The length of the palm from the bottom of the fingers to the wrist is usually less than the length of the fingers.
- Water hands are generally short sized and oval shaped. Their fingers are long and flexible. The length of the palm from the wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually equal to the length of the fingers.
- Fire hands are square or rectangular in shape. Their fingers are short and pink colored. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually greater than the length of the fingers.
According to some traditions of palmistry, Earth and Water hands bear fewer but deeper lines, while the Air and Fire hands have more yet less clear lines.
